Booked Club for Grown-Ups

Booked Club reads contemporary, literary fiction and nonfiction from a diverse range of authors. Cooked at Booked Club

Cooked at Booked is a potluck-style club that meets monthly to enjoy a meal (or snacks!) featuring recipes from one shared cookbook! Food's better with friends, books are better with friends, and cookbooks are too! Questions? Email Scarlett@bookedevanston.com.

Adventurers Guild Book Club

The Adventurers Guild Book Club, hosted by Booked's Mr. Gus, is a monthly, 90-minute book club and craft session for kids ages 8-12. Each month, Guild members read a graphic novel or chapter book, participate in a guided discussion, and do a book-related craft. If you have an Adventurer who'd like to join next month's Guild, please email augustine@bookedevanston.com.

Young Witches Spellcasting Society and Book Club

The Young Witches Spellcasting Society and Book Club offers seasonal enrollment for four sessions across four Friday afternoons for 8-12 year olds. Led by Mr. Gus (our own personal bookstore witch!), Society members will read one book per season and work on age-appropriate witchy business--crafts, spells, etc. For info about YWSSBC, email augustine@bookedevanston.com.

Perfect Day to Be Alone
Title
Perfect Day to Be Alone
  • Perfect Day to Be Alone by Nanae Aoyama
Price
$15.99
Ships in 2-3 Days
The English-language debut of a prize-winning Japanese author, this touching, subtly funny novel evokes the daily struggles and hopes of two women from different generations.

When her mother emigrates to China for work, 20-year-old Chizu moves in with 71-year-old Ginko, an eccentric distant relative, taking a room in her ramshackle Tokyo home, with its two resident cats and the persistent rattle of passing trains.

Living their lives in imperfect symmetry, they establish an uneasy alliance, stress tested by Chizu's flashes of youthful spite. As the four seasons pass, Chizu navigates a series of tedious part-time jobs and unsatisfying relationships, before eventually finding her feet and salvaging a fierce independence from her solitude.

A Perfect Day to Be Alone is a moving, microscopic examination of loneliness and heartbreak. With flashes of deadpan humor and a keen eye for poignant detail, Aoyama chronicles the painful process of breaking free from the moorings of youth.

Helen of Troy, 1993: Poems
Title
Helen of Troy, 1993: Poems
  • Helen Of Troy, 1993: Poems by Maria Zoccola
Price
$18.00
Available In Store
*Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2025 by Debutiful*

"By turns hilarious and provocative, it's an affecting character study and modern mythic retelling." --Publishers Weekly, Books That Should Be on Your Radar in 2025

Part myth retelling, part character study, this sharp, visceral debut poetry collection reimagines Helen of Troy from Homer's Iliad as a disgruntled housewife in 1990s Tennessee.

In the hills of Sparta, Tennessee, during the early nineties, Helen decides to break free from the life that stifles her: marriage, motherhood, the monotonous duties of a Southern housewife. But leaving isn't the same thing as staying gone...

Rooted in a lush natural landscape, this stunning poetry collection explores Helen's isolation and rebellion as her expansive personality clashes with the social rigidity of her small town. In richly layered poems with settings that range from football games to Chuck E. Cheese to the bathroom of a Motel 6, Helen enters adulthood as a disaffected homemaker grasping for agency. She marries the wrong man, gives birth to a child she is not ready to parent, and embarks on an affair that throws her life into chaos. But she never surrenders ownership of her story or her choices, insisting to the reader: "if you never owned a bone-sharp biography... / i don't want to hear it. i want you silent. / i want you listening to me."

Blurring the line between mythology and modernity, Helen of Troy, 1993 is an unforgettable collection that shows the Homeric Helen like she's never been seen before.

Fagin the Thief
Title
Fagin the Thief
  • Fagin The Thief: A Novel by Allison Epstein
Price
$28.00
Ships in 2-3 Days
A thrilling reimagining of the world of Charles Dickens, as seen through the eyes of the infamous Jacob Fagin, London's most gifted pickpocket, liar, and rogue.

"Fagin the Thief takes one of literature's greatest rogues and gives him a soul, a backstory, and a spotlight. Layered and clever, Epstein's story is as ambitious as it is deeply satisfying." --Rebecca Makkai, New York Times bestselling author of I Have Some Questions for You

Long before Oliver Twist stumbled onto the scene, Jacob Fagin was scratching out a life for himself in the dark alleys of nineteenth-century London. Born in the Jewish enclave of Stepney shortly after his father was executed as a thief, Jacob's whole world is his open-minded mother, Leah. But Jacob's prospects are forever altered when a light-fingered pickpocket takes Jacob under his wing and teaches him a trade that pays far better than the neighborhood boys could possibly dream.

Striking out on his own, Jacob familiarizes himself with London's highest value neighborhoods while forging his own path in the shadows. But everything changes when he adopts an aspiring teenage thief named Bill Sikes, whose mercurial temper poses a danger to himself and anyone foolish enough to cross him. Along the way, Jacob's found family expands to include his closest friend, Nancy, and his greatest protégé, the Artful Dodger. But as Bill's ambition soars and a major robbery goes awry, Jacob is forced to decide what he really stands for--and what a life is worth.

Colorfully written and wickedly funny, Allison Epstein breathes fresh life into the teeming streets of Dickensian London--reclaiming one of Victorian literature's most notorious villains in an unforgettable new adventure.
